Host City reaps awards

The first City west of the Great Dividing Range to host an LGAQ Conference, Toowoomba boasts an impressive record in Local Government. Within the last year the City has won the regional section of the 1999 Training Awards, received national awards for its Wetalla wastewater treatment plant and Chief Executive Officer, Peter Taylor was recently presented with the Keith H Wood Medal.

This latter honour is awarded annually to an outstanding engineer in Local Government, by the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA, formerly IMEA). Peter has also been elected as national President of the IPWEA.

In receiving the Keith H Wood medal, however, he maintained the honour was largely attributable to the strength of the teams with which he works. “I have had good teams to work with at the Toowoomba City Council, in the state and national executive of the IMEA and at home,” he said.

“At Toowoomba City Council we are aware that good teamwork builds success and is vital in delivering effective and efficient services to the people we represent. Peter Taylor said Council was proud it was chosen as the venue for the Queensland Conference.

“Our staff worked hard, in conjunction with the LGAQ, to help ensure the success of the Conference,” he said. “As well as having great pride in their City, they are aware of the importance of such an event in economic terms.” He estimated the Conference injected approximately $1.5 million into the local economy.

“Delegates to the Conference were unanimous in their praise of the overall beauty and presentation of public and private areas in the City,” Peter said.
