The first Councils to form Partnership Agreements with the State Government were Circular Head Council and Launceston City Council.
Under its Agreement, Circular Head has recently received $99,000. Of this, $49,000 will employ a specialist Environmental Services Manager while the remainder will go towards the implementation of Circular Head’s model planning scheme. The Environmental Services Manager will assist in the enhancement and preservation of Circular Head’s clean and green reputation.
Among the tasks to be completed will be the monitoring and improvement of the area’s water quality to match its world class air quality. This will further enhance Circular Head’s capacity to take advantage of the growing and lucrative international market for premium organic food products. The final Agreement includes community modifications to the model planning scheme which were made during the month long public consultation period.
Launceston city Council met recently with State Government officials to review a draft of their agreement. The draft ageement is wide ranging and covers economic development, tourism, sport and recreation, arts and culture, future managment of the Inveresk Railyards, Launceston as a city of innovation and learning, the delivery of community services, environement and planning issues, transport, rivers, and information technology.
Launceston’s agreement is nearing completion and is a pilot for furture agreements with Metropolitan Councils in the State.
