The opening of the revamped Redcliffe jetty in November, the third upgrade of the facility in its 114 year history, provided an opportunity for the community to celebrate the special place the jetty has in local history and lore.
A 14 hour program of events culminating in a concert and fireworks followed the official opening by Mayor Alan Boulton. Unlike the two previous jetties, the structure is protected by a 220 metre rock breakwater. This will provide safe mooring facilities in all but extreme weather conditions.
It has been constructed, complete with water and sewerage services, to allow a suitable commercial development to be established at a later date. The new structure also features bait and fish cleaning tables.
Councillor Ralph Ruiter said the 218 metre jetty continues a tradition that has made the jetty synonymous with Redcliffe City’s history and lifestyle. “The jetty fuses the old with the new, recapturing a character that dates back to last century while also addressing modern water transportation requirements,” he said.
“This project is arguably one of the most significant tourism and recreation projects to be undertaken in south east Queensland this year, and has spawned considerable commercial interest from tourist operators. “To date, several businesses have indicated they want to operate from the jetty.”
Councillor Ruiter said the two previous jetties played a vital role in the development of Redcliffe City and its seaside identity. “The new jetty will continue this trend by providing a maritime facility that will be unique in south east Queensland,” he said.
