Community Services with the morning news

An initiative to publicise the activities and events organised by Rockhampton City Council’s Community Services team has resulted in a handy pocket sized calendar. This is distributed each month with Rockhampton’s daily newspaper the Morning Bulletin.

Local company Dairy Farmers is sponsoring the colourful trifold calendar. Sales Manager Bob Kingston said it is the first time the company has joined with Local Government for a marketing promotion of this type. “The calendar lists a wide range of activities and events provided by the Community Services Unit of Council,” he said. “Up until now, I would think that most people would not have been aware of the wide variety available, and that’s what we wanted to help promote.”

Activities range from Seniors activities at Schotia Place and Bauhinia House, exhibitions at the Rockhampton Art Gallery, story telling at the Library and live performances at the Pilbeam Theatre. “Community Services encompasses 20 sites in the City, providing a variety of activities and events, most of which are free and cater for different community groups, ages and interests,” said Operations Manager Community Services, Sandra Cannon. “We wanted the community to be aware of the wonderful opportunities Council provides, this seemed the ideal way of doing it.”

Apart from listing events for each day of the month, the calendar includes contact numbers for various Council services, a description of the facilities and work carried out by various Council Units, and advertising of local events. The inaugural March edition of the calendar was launched at the Archer Park & Purrey Steam Tram Museum in late February.

The calendar is also available at Council Customer Service Centres, City Hall, Community Service sites, Tourist offices, Kmart, and on its own website www.community.rockhampton.qld.gov.au. In addition to Dairy Farmers it is also supported by Web Publishing Australia, Cqonline.com.au and the Morning Bulletin.
