Building on its strong commitment to environmental issues, the Adelaide City Council as part of its World Environment Day celebrations recently launched its newly revised Environment Management Plan &endash; Local Agenda 21.
With a clear vision focused on protection and enhancement of the environment, the revised Plan is set to take the City through until 2005.
It leads the way in recognising that environmental sustainability is achieved through the many individual actions of City workers, residents and visitors, and the product of partnerships across different levels of government, business and industry.
The major environmental challenges facing the City of Adelaide over the next five years, which reflect its geographical, historical and socio economic context, have been identified.
Local Government has the potential to impact in four main areas &endash; water quality and conservation, waste minimisation, energy conservation and biodiversity enhancement.
A range of outcomes in these areas have been developed and will be achieved by focusing on environmental corporate performance, community participation, inhouse demonstrations of environmental management best practice, and a risk management approach.
Sustainability is the cornerstone of the Council’s Environment Management Plan.
It encompasses the economic, social and environmental pursuits of the City, which Council will support through the adoption of sustainability principles across its activities.
Specific community projects outlined in the Plan aim to stimulate involvement across the community and prompt new initiatives in the future.
