Competitive Internet services for Orana

Councils and communities in the Orana region of New South Wales have combined forces to obtain excellent Internet Service Provision (ISP) at competitive prices.

The Orana Region Telecommunications Project Committee comprises Council and community representatives from Narromine, Cobar, Nyngan, Warren, Wellington, Brewarrina and Tottenham.

Meeting recently in Narromine, they aim to provide a physical ‘Point of Presence’ at each of the above locations, in the form of a satellite dish and landline through Telstra.

This will enable residents to have local call Internet access at a competitive rate of $1.00 per hour. Close consultation with individual communities is a requirement of the project.

Funded through Networking the Nation, Narromine Shire Council has been appointed as project coordinator.

Tender documentation, drawn up earlier this year, included strict performance criteria. This will assure each community of a high quality of service. Tender applications have been assessed by consultant, Glenn Lee from Structel Pty Ltd, and Greg Black from the NSW Office of Information Technology.

Following the Orana Committee meeting in June, installation of points of presence have begun in Narromine, Cobar and Warren.

The other areas will come on line as soon as their applications for funding to Networking the Nation are approved.

For further information contact Jack Garside, General Manager Narromine Shire, telephone (02) 6889 1322.
