Banners expressing the hopes and visions of young people for the area’s local environment were used to help set the agenda at the Youth Environment Forum staged by Warringah Council in partnership with its Youth Advisory Group on 27 October.
Mayor of Warringah, Councillor Peter Moxham, said the banners were prepared by young people throughout Warringah.
“Banners are a great way of promoting new ideas, hopes and feelings about issues like the environment,” he said.
“School and youth groups in Warringah were asked to participate in the Youth Environment Forum by sending up to four representatives to discuss local environmental issues.
“Interested groups were also invited to create a banner for the forum so that the ideas under discussion reflect those of local youth.”
The banners will also provide an artistic resource for the community as well as a record of young people’s environmental aspirations.
“YAG members were actively involved in promoting the forum and helped out with the organisation of workshops on the day,” said Council’s Environmental Education Officer, Jade Herriman. She added that all of the delegates were under 24 years of age.
“The forum was designed as a structured hands on event including brainstorming workshops, displays and presentations by the young people attending,” she said.
“As well as exploring environmental issues, the event provided an opportunity to learn about decision making.” Banners prepared for the forum were draped around the Council Chambers.
“Warringah Council provided paints and banner fabric to local schools and youth groups free of charge on a first come first served basis,” Jade Herriman said.
“A kit with instructions for creating banners was also provided to the groups.
