Rewarding top performers

Hobart City Council and the City of Perth have been recognised at the annual Australian Business Excellence Awards, presented by the Australian Quality Council. These awards acknowledge outstanding organisational performance, in both the private and public sectors, as measured against stringent evaluation criteria.

The City of Perth was one of three organisations that received the Progress Toward Business Excellence. This is granted to enterprises that have recorded performance improvement against national business criteria.

Hobart City Council is one of six organisations that received a Foundation in Business Excellence Award for organisations that have established a measurable basis for business improvement.

“Award entrants commonly say that simply participating in the Awards process provides a real focus in their organisations for driving improvement,” said Norbert Vogel, AQC’s CEO.

“Entrants also talk about the enormous value they get from the knowledge transfer and feedback gained from evaluators – both informally and through the detailed report prepared for every Award entrant.”

The annual Australian Business Excellence Awards were presented at a gala dinner during the International Business Excellence Summit held on 26-27 March at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.

“It was the consistent implementation of our plans across the organisation that led to this Award,” said Noelene Jennings, Director of Corporate Services, City of Perth.

“Our plans are all linked and include community involvement both in planning and budgeting. Staff then ensure that values and expected practices are put in place. Reporting and reviewing are also vital, with every area of the organisation producing monthly reports.”

Perth City Council has around 450 staff members. Council took out a Foundation Level Award in 1998 and having now achieved the Progress level award indicates that it is steadily moving along the ‘quality path’.
