Grants and community involvement enhance Alice Springs’ parks

On 26 July, Northern Territory’s Minister for Local Government, Dr Richard Lim, presented a cheque to Alice Springs Deputy Mayor, Jenny Mostran, for development of Kurrajong and Gosse Street Parks.

The Special Purpose Grant of $70,000 will provide play equipment, park furniture and shade structures in the two community parks. Council will also install 600 metres of irrigation and extend power into Kurrajong Park to run an automatic watering system. Conservation Volunteers Australia and Greening Australia will create water retention ponds and prepare the ground for community tree planting in September.

“The Kurrajong Area Residents Association and Council have worked hard to develop Kurrajong Park and this grant will help it take a great leap forward,” said Alderman Jenny Mostran. “We are especially grateful to the Northern Territory Government for making this possible through this generous grant. “Council also appreciates the financial assistance given to developing the Gosse Street Park through a $5,000 grant.”

The Gosse Street Park has recently benefited from an intensive working bee involving residents and Conservation Volunteers Australia planting trees, spreading mulch and working with young BMX riders to create a BMX track.
