Discovering Melville

The City of Melville in Perth launched its new municipal museum, the Melville Discovery Centre in June this year as part of the centenary of the City of Melville. Located in the recently renovated Civic Centre, this innovative museum offers an exciting interactive environment for the public to engage with the City’s unique history.

The project was first discussed ten years ago when the Melville History Society encouraged Council to establish a museum to preserve Melville’s cultural heritage. Now completed the Melville Discovery Centre will focus on adding to an existing collection of artefacts and other documentation, that relate specifically to its suburbs, people, places, events and development.

The museum offers glimpses of Melville’s history, from early settlement right through to modern suburbia. Significantly, the collection will embrace much of the post World War II period, when Melville really began to develop and grow into what we see today. Displays will change regularly so there will always be something new and exciting to see.

Within the museum is a public information centre. This self referencing section gives the public an opportunity to come in and view documentation and articles about the City either for general interest or academic research.

Newly appointed staff, including Curator Lorinda Tetley, and a soon to be appointed Public Programs Officer, will develop promotional strategies and educational programs.

This will ensure full utilisation of the museum by the public. Admission is free, with the museum open Monday to Friday from 8.30am – 5.00pm. For further information contact Lorinda Tetley on (08) 9364 0710.
