Warwick tackles men’s health

Warwick Shire in south east Queensland has developed a Men’s Health Program to assist men in leading healthier lives. The Warwick Community Health and Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre identified the need for men to take responsibility for their own health, and the fact that men often leave health problems until it is too late.

“The program is about encouraging men with ‘learning to do things’ and steering them, with peer support, to reduce or eliminate behaviour actions and habits that pose serious health risks,” said Warwick Shire Council’s Mayor, Councillor Ron Bellingham.

The Program itself comprises a personalised exercise program available to men twice a week, encouraging use of facilities, and weekly information sessions on health and communication issues. At $8.25 per week, the Program is cost effective for participants. This covers at least one lecture seminar about health issues, plus gym and exercise access and support at least twice weekly.

“A staff member has been assigned to implement and coordinate the project and another to assist,” said Councillor Ron Bellingham.

The success of the Men’s Health Program has resulted in 40 regular participants, increased enquiries from the public, and now enquiries about a women’s health program. The Warwick Men’s Health Program was a National Finalist in the Physical Activity Project category of the 2001 Heart Foundation Kellogg Local Government Awards.
