Thuringowa City Council has won several awards for excellence in planning. The most recent awards were presented at the 2001 Awards of the Queensland Division of the Royal Australian Planning Institute in Brisbane.
Thuringowa Council received a Certificate of Merit for Social and Community Based Planning. This recognised excellence in planning undertaken for the smaller northern communities of Balgal, Mystic Sands and Rollingstone, Paluma, Toomulla, Saunders Beach and Toolakea.
The Institute also awarded a Certificate of Merit for Urban Planning Achievements as part of the Draft Thuringowa Planning Scheme.
Director of the Council’s Planning and Development Services, Robert Henwood said the awards reflected a strong team effort in the Council’s planning division and a commitment to community consultation. He said the Council recognised that sound planning was the key to maintaining the quality of life enjoyed by residents in Thuringowa while meeting the challenges of rapid growth.
Recent population statistics and forecasts for the State show that Thuringowa is the fastest growing community in North Queensland.
