This year, in a collaborative venture with international affiliates in the USA and NZ, Local Government Managers Australia – Australia’s peak professional association – is mounting an International Best Practices Symposium in Darling Harbour on 10 and 11 May. This immediately precedes the Annual National Congress, also in Darling Harbour, from 12 to 15 May.
Five case studies from Australia, New Zealand, USA and Europe, chosen for their leading edge excellence and universal applicability, will be analysed over the two days of the Symposium. Delegates will take part in workshop sessions designed to translate the learning outcomes into their own authority. Each case study will be introduced by a designer/implementer presentation and supported by detailed case documentation. Work group analysis, guided by skilled facilitators, will optimise learning outcomes for all delegates.
The Symposium also includes a ‘Marketplace of Ideas’ where small group, round table sessions conducted over an extended lunch break, allow delegates to choose from one of around 20 topics under discussion. The Marketplace of Ideas is a proven means of exchanging and stimulating ideas and will add value to Symposium attendance.
The National Congress, Australia’s Premium LG Forum, is highly regarded for its broad and relevant content, its stimulating ideas and expert analysis. There is no better – nor better value – organisational development forum for Australian Local Government Councillors and officers to take part in each year. Once again it will feature around 30 separate sessions, through three streams targeting Management, Government and Professional Development.
By this means, the LGMA National Congress is able to deliver valuable outcomes to senior, middle and junior management as well as elected representatives. Both the Symposium and Congress offer unique and important learning opportunities for Australian Councils. With the added benefit of probably Australia’s best conference venue, the 2002 events are a must.
