The Cyberbus program aims to take IT telecommunications resources into remote and rural townships within the Shire of Murrindindi, using an appropriately fitted out bus, in a similar manner to mobile library services. Located in north central Victoria, Murrindindi has a number of towns and villages within its area. The Cyberbus is totally independent from power and telephone lines, with an onboard generator.
With Telstra Bi-directional satellite technology, mounted on a purpose built trailer, it is able to operate at any location where the satellite signal is accessible.
This mobile Internet service is also an outreach facility for other vital services, such as Centrelink, Community Health, Drug and Alcohol and other welfare agencies, to deliver programs online in remote locations. An example of this is the new Safer House Program to be jointly offered by Murrindindi Shire Council and the Victorian Police.
During March, the Cyberbus will travel throughout the Murrindindi Shire providing opportunities for the people to access this interactive computer program. It enables people to examine home security in an interactive way, and trial different means to better secure their property, as well as gain on site advice about home safety. The Cyberbus will visit 21 community locations throughout the Shire including all 16 primary schools.
