Boroondara’s graffiti campaign a success

A campaign to rid Boroondara of graffiti is proving to be a success as hundreds of residents take advantage of a free offer of paint and graffiti removal kits to remove graffiti from private properties.

The campaign, launched by the City of Boroondara in late 2001, involves removing graffiti from public assets within 24 hours of it being reported and offering residents free cans of paint and graffiti removal kits to remove graffiti from private properties.

Owners of private property that has been damaged by graffiti receive a letter from the Mayor offering a free can of Dulux paint or graffiti removal kit. This is an ongoing and widespread community education campaign involving Council, community and various groups, to inform the need to directly address both graffiti and litter.

According to the Director Works and Governance at the City of Boroondara, John Nevins, this decisive action by residents demonstrates the community need for graffiti to be tackled in an effective and proactive way.

“The significant decrease in graffiti on public and private properties has gone a long way to reducing the impacts of graffiti,” said John Nevins. “The quick removal of graffiti from fences, poles, buildings, signs and walls not only helps improve the visual amenity of Boroondara, but in many cases also acts as a deterrent to vandals. One of the clear commitments of this Council in the 2001-2004 Council Plan is maintaining a clean, safe and attractive Boroondara.”

The partnership between the City of Boroondara and Dulux Australia is a positive example of Local Government working with local businesses for the benefit of the community.
