Tracking the progress of Newcastle’s Honeysuckle development

Honeysuckle Development Corporation is transforming Newcastle’s once industrial harbour side land into a place where people will work, live and relax. The Corporation was established in 1992 with State Government funding of $100 million to contribute to the regeneration of the City.

Over seven years, the Corporation turned a contaminated site into a prime site for development. Roads, bridges and affordable housing have been constructed on this extensive waterfront location adjacent to the CBD. From 1997, the challenge was to market Honeysuckle sites to attract developers. Over 36 sites are sold, under contract or in negotiation.

The projects completed are valued at $42 million with projects under way worth a further $235 million.

Newcastle’s first four star hotel, the Crowne Plaza Hotel, is an integral part of Honeysuckle. At Linwood, terrace style homes have replaced derelict wool stores. Already a recreational marina, which is under construction, is bringing new interest and activity to the harbour.

A $20 million commercial office building, Honeysuckle House that will house 400 workers, is expected to be complete this year. The Boardwalk, a vibrant mix of café and restaurants, boutique office space, apartments and landscaped public space, is another eagerly anticipated project.

As development continues so too will the provision of public open space, including the extension of a foreshore walkway around the harbour.

The Hunter Valley Research Foundation estimates that the Corporation has created 1,440 jobs, attracted 500 residents and investment of over $321 million.

It forecasts that, when completed, Honeysuckle will be home to 3,000 people, provide 5,000 new jobs and will have created almost a billion dollars in investment in the Hunter Region.
