In its aim to provide high quality childcare, Fairfield City Council in Sydney, recently commenced an accreditation process for its Family Day Care Scheme. Launched by Fairfield Mayor, Councillor Anwar Khoshaba, and the Member for Prospect, Janice Crosio, the accreditation will ensure children receive high quality care that promotes learning and development, as well as a structure for defining quality childcare practices and standards in day care settings.
“Fairfield’s Family Day Care Scheme is one of the largest in Australia with more than 80 carers and 400 children,” said Fairfield City Council’s Manager Family Day Care, Jessica Orellana.“Our Scheme caters for Fairfield’s culturally diverse population by giving parents the opportunity to elect culturally specific childcare. For example, Vietnamese parents can elect to place their child in a Vietnamese home and we assist with this matching if requested.”
What the accreditation process involves is that all registered participants are required to introduce systems for continuing quality improvement. They must demonstrate an ongoing quality improvement process, which is evaluated against the Family Day Care Quality Assurance (FDCQA) Quality Practices Guide.
To meet the standards required for accreditation, a scheme must produce satisfactory ratings for various quality elements. They include interaction; physical environment; children’s experiences; learning and development; health; hygiene; nutrition; safety and well being; coordination of unit staff; management; and administration.
