Innovation, excellence and resourcefulness not restricted by size or location

Since 1986 the Federal Government, through the National Office of Local Government has been recognising, rewarding and promoting the innovative and leading practices of Local Government. The National Awards for Local Government have highlighted the excellent work being done by Local Government in communities around Australia to improve business practice and service delivery in their communities.

The 2002 Local Government Awards were launched at the Local Government Managers Australia National Congress and Expo held in Sydney on May 13. Application kits will be sent to every Council throughout Australia so that no one will miss out on the opportunity to demonstrate how they are addressing the challenges being faced within Councils and also in their community.

As you will see from the contents of the kit, there are 11 categories in the 2002 Awards, including the new categories of Financial Management and the Special Award for Strengthening Indigenous Communities.

Each year the Awards attract hundreds of entries that receive both national and international attention and we expect that 2002 will be no different. The high standard of entries demonstrates the level of ingenuity, capacity within Councils and the pride and commitment that Councils and their communities have in their local area.

All Councils will have already received the 2001 Guide to Leading Practice that provides full details of all entries received last year. It’s a great source of information about the expertise of Local Government around Australia. Why not have another look at the Guide to help you put together your entry for 2002?

This year the closing date for entries will be 1 July and we encourage all Councils throughout Australia to enter. We would particularly like to hear from our rural and remote Councils in this the Year of the Outback. In celebrating the Year of the Outback the winners of the 2002 Awards will be announced at the Australian Local Government Association’s National General Assembly to be held in Alice Springs in early November. We would like to welcome you there to help us showcase the exceptional work of Local Government.
