Driving the reduction of greenhouse emissions

Council’s recent purchase of a Toyota Prius, a car with a low emissions hybrid petrol/electric engine, is being used as a promotional tool to focus attention on opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Toyota Prius has a hybrid petrol/electric drive system. It uses approximately 50 per cent less petrol and more importantly, emits significantly less than half of the gas emissions produced by Council’s other fleet cars.

Council has put its ‘money where its mouth is’ with regard to responsible environmental leadership and is actively seeking like minded companies willing to invest in the region’s sustainable future. Carrathool took delivery of the Prius in April as part of the Sustainable Energy Development Authority regional seminar. Toyota agreed to pay for sign writing on the car that advertises Carrathool Shire’s efforts in reducing emissions.

The fuel economy of the Prius is expected to average five litres per 100 kilometres. A log book of the car’s performance is being kept and monthly figures are available on Council’s website.

Council recognised this as an opportunity to showcase the Shire and its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability. Its acquisition of the Toyota Prius, alongside being an advanced member of the Cities for Climate Protection program, demonstrates Council’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
