Environmental levy has wide support

As part of the Wingecarribee Our Future Environment (WOFE) program, Council, backed by community support, has included an environmental levy to fund environmental projects. With approval from the State Government, a special rate was raised to generate $500,000 per year over three years from 1 July 2000.

Extensive community consultation resulted in 63 per cent community support for the introduction of the special rate to fund the program. Program funds are spent on three main areas including natural biodiversity, water quality and bushland.

“The WOFE program places Council in an advanced position to now take stock of its valuable environmental resources and take effective action,” said Eddie Anderson, WOFE Coordinator. “These translate to real on the ground outcomes to conserve and enhance our natural bushland areas, riparian zones and waterways.”

As part of the program a Bushland Regeneration Team, comprising two bush regenerators, has been set up to maintain bushland. Almost $100,000 has been allocated to their activities each year over the three year period.

An environment committee has also been established to oversee the progress of the program and to assist with decision making on works and expenditure.

“The program is a vital element in Wingecarribee’s current management operations that will enable it to better manage the natural environment, not only for the benefit of present day residents and visitors, but also the benefit of future generations,” Eddie Anderson said.
