Brewarrina Shire and Warringah strengthen their relationship

In June, 50 Warringah sports stars and top coaches visited Brewarrina to share some of Warringah’s successful sporting tips and strategies in coaching clinics and matches. This event took place as part of their celebration of the Year of the Outback and the two Council’s Sister City Agreement established in June 2000.

It has provided opportunities for each Council to gain an understanding and learn about each other’s communities and lifestyles through sporting, cultural, youth and business exchanges and links. Warringah is located in Sydney’s north shore and has a population of 134,000, while Brewarrina in north west NSW has around 2,200 residents.

“This sporting extravaganza was a continuation of the fond relationship built between our Councils and citizens since June 2000,” said Warringah Mayor, Councillor Darren Jones. “In this the Year of the Outback, it is vitally important that Warringah, a vibrant beachside community, gets to learn about, meet, and exchange valuable life experiences with people from remote communities. The trip reinforced Warringah’s commitment to extending a hand of friendship to our mates in the bush who are doing it tough.”

The Sister City relationship between Warringah Council and Brewarrina Shire Council won two awards last year at the Australian Sister Cities Association’s Annual Conference. The two Councils received the awards in recognition of their relationships youth exchange program and came first in the best new affiliation by any Australian Sister City.
