A two week stint working on a bushland management project at Lord Howe Island has provided Brad Curtis, from Melbourne’s Maroondah City Council, with skills that will enhance his work at Council. From late June to early July this year, Maroondah City Council’s Bushland Coordinator and Team Leader Parks and Gardens, Brad Curtis, worked on a bushland management project at Lord Howe Island, located 700 kilometres north east of Sydney.
Brad was chosen for one of two bushland regeneration teams who travelled to Lord Howe Island to assist in the significant environmental weed removal projects. Funding for the regeneration teams came from the Commonwealth Government’s Environmental Trust.
“The Park’s Board of Management successfully applied for funding which covered the cost of plane flights, food and accommodation at the Research Centre allocated to the six team members for the fortnight,” said Brad Curtis.
The team members applied for the positions and were drawn from all over Australia. Brad was one of two successful Victorian participants. The team worked with the local Park Ranger and Board, who manage the ecosystem on Lord Howe Island. Their main tasks included the removal of the weed, sweet pithosporum.
Currently working as an Environmental Assessment Officer for the Maroondah Biodiversity Rating Concessional Program, Brad will now apply the techniques he learnt on Lord Howe Island to his work.
