Using Transport SA’s CD-ROM titled The Road to Worker Safety, the City of Port Adelaide Enfield is providing training of parks and road maintenance staff covering statutory obligations and safe practices. The CD-ROM is being used by all who work on roads in SA inclusive of Local Governments.
“By law in South Australia, road workers are required to complete an accredited course in work zone traffic management which carries a five year accreditation,” said Council’s Risk Management Coordinator, David Mallet. The CD-ROM training is a refresher course which must be undertaken once every year after receiving the accreditation.”
The CD is fully interactive and can be used in conjunction with a facilitator within a group, or individually. It contains 35 comprehensive modules that cover topics including legislation, frequently changing work areas, roadwork speed limits and pedestrian control, just to name a few. Each module reflects the Australian Standard 1742 Part Three (1996).
Video footage is shown to participants who then answer a series of multiple choice questions. After all questions have been answered correctly, the trainee can move on to the next module.
“In Council’s course evaluation the question is asked to indicate whether they would recommend the training, and 95 per cent of trainees have indicated yes so far,” David Mallet said.
