Cyclists will soon be able to ride all the way from Old Timers on the South Stuart Highway, along the Todd River and through to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station, in what will surely be one of the most scenic leisure activities available at Alice Springs.Alice Springs Town Council has committed $70,000 for the completion of the bicycle track along the Todd River.
The extra 245 metres of bicycle track will meander gently between the eastern edge of the Leichhardt Terrace car park and the Todd River, linking to existing pedestrian access points from the car park.Work started in October and will take about a month to complete.
“Having such a long, substantially continuous cycle path will be a great addition to the cycle path network in Alice Springs,” Mayor Fran Kilgariff said.“It will make travel safer for bicyclists, pedestrians and drivers, and it will be a bonus for the many tourists who visit Alice Springs. I would encourage all bicycle riders to take advantage of the scenic path and the increased safety it will afford them.”
Arrnernte Council has been contracted to build the cycle track and Native Title Holders have granted permission for the track.
