Youth take a leading role at Renmark Paringa

Young people in Renmark Paringa have let their Council know that they want to be involved in the development of their area and community. Through the Renmark Action Committee for Youth (RACY), they are addressing a variety of community issues.

Council received funding to establish the committee earlier this year and the first public meeting calling for interest in its formation was held in April.

“More than 50 youth attended with 30 filling in forms to indicate that they would like to be on a youth advisory committee,” said Council’s Community Services Officer, Jan Porter. “Since then we have had four meetings of our Renmark Action Committee for Youth. They have shown an interest in a wide variety of community concerns.”

Members of RACY age from 12 to 20 years, with the majority aged between 15 to 18 years.

“Their interest in community issues, ranges from the need for more activities for young people in their area, increasing shaded recreation areas for the community, improving public amenities, and painting sections of the local skate park using aerosol art techniques,” Jan Porter said.

So far the RACY members have been involved in the launch of RACY, and the purchase of a paver for the local skate park development. Future projects include the grand opening for the local skate park, accessing funding for play equipment, involvement in Youth Week 2003, and development of a newsletter.
