At the heart of Local Government

The Heart Foundation Kellogg Local Government Awards celebrate Councils that work in their communities to promote and improve heart health. Through these Awards the National Heart Foundation and Kellogg Australia recognise that Local Government is in a unique position to impact the health of communities and individuals.

In November, the National Heart Foundation and Kellogg announced the national winners of the 2002 Heart Foundation Kellogg Local Government Awards at the National General Assembly of Local Government at Alice Springs. Awards were presented at state and national levels in seven categories to both Local Governments and organisations working with Local Government on collaborative projects undertaken with schools, health and community organisations, private industry, or between Councils.

The National Winner and National Healthy Nutrition Project winner, taking out the $10,000 award, was Coorong District Council in South Australia for its Coorong Good Food Program. This program promotes good food and nutrition in the rural Coorong community by implementing innovative strategies such as good food recognition awards, good food policy for schools, involvement in school and community vegetable gardens, accreditation for local retailers that provide healthy food choices and food events.

The National Physical Activity Project was won by the Brisbane City Council’s Black Diamonds Program. National Recreation Infrastructure Facility was awarded to the City of Gosnells’ Path Networks Improvement Project in Western Australia. The National Policy for Structural Change award was won by the Moreland City Council for ‘Achieving Heart Health Through Implementation of Integrated Policies’, integrating five policies to improve the cardiovascular health of their community.

The Onkaparinga Community Playground Inc. won the National Project by a Community Organisation award for their community built playground in Jubilee Park. The National Project with Limited Resources was awarded to the Warburton community, in the Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku in WA for their Disco at the Oval. Tasmania’s Dorset Council and its local youth advisory group won the Small Rural and Remote Community Project for their ‘Kameleon’, an ex dental health van that has become a youth health outreach van. The Year of the Outback Heart Foundation Kellogg Award was won by Tiwi Islands Local Government from the Northern Territory.
