Nambucca’s plan for economic

In an area that is relatively small in population and with limited economic diversity, the Nambucca Economic Revival Plan aims to provide a clear path for economic growth and prosperity. Nambucca Shire is located on the mid north coast of New South Wales, some 490 kilometres from Sydney. It has a population of 17,700 and covers an area of 1,443 square kilometres.

The Shire’s Economic Revival Plan aims to create a more diverse economy, using new marketing techniques, such as clustering similar groups to share costs under a single Nambucca Valley corporate logo. By 2003, over 300 new jobs are expected to be created.

Only strategic initiatives or priority projects that have been fully scoped, costed and funded, and which have a detailed implementation timetable are included in the Plan.

Pamphlets promoting Nambucca Shire as ‘investment ready’ and an events folder have been produced and distributed. The Department of State and Regional Development is assisting through grants for businesses to relocate to Nambucca, as well as for established businesses to expand or redevelop their activities.

“With the Shire coordinating the program, the community is seeing Council actively promoting economic development, creating increased business and investor confidence in the area,” said Nambucca’s Economic Development Officer, Wayne Lowe. “Working with Council’s Economic Development Committee, we have attracted $7.5 million in investments over some 17 projects, creating 179 jobs. Currently, we have another ten investment project proposals worth an estimated $4.8 million, which have the potential to create a further 180 jobs.”
