In 2000, Melbourne was the first capital city in Australia and only the third worldwide to be recognised by the World Health Organisation as a Safe Community. Council works with all community groups and has established strong partnerships with a number of key organisations including Victoria Police, the Victorian Government, Ministerial Crime Prevention Council, residents’ groups and business interests to develop a wide range of initiatives that continue to promote the safety of our city.

The Lord Mayor’s Safety and Drugs Advisory Committee was established to further demonstrate Council’s commitment to tackling issues of safety across the municipality.

Council’s focus is on safe city transport and parking, perceptions of safety, injury prevention, liquor licensing matters and enhancing safety through local community partnerships. Initiatives include the following.

Safe City Cameras – placed in strategic locations around the city to ensure the safety of people in the city.

Safe City taxi ranks – staffed by a security officer in a distinct uniform. Safe City Cameras monitor the ranks during their hours of operation from midnight Friday to 6.00am Saturday and midnight Saturday to 6.00am Sunday each weekend of the year and during special events.

Safe City Car Parks – This Accreditation Scheme is a joint initiative of the City of Melbourne and Victoria Police and has been developed in consultation with the Victorian Parking Industry Association. It rewards best practice and recognises operational procedures and policies that promote the safety and security of car parks and their patrons.
