Bayside City Council hopes to keep its beaches clean by asking local retailers and shoppers to cut the use of plastic bags by refusing, reducing, re-using and recycling. Bayside is an ambassador for the national ‘Bag Yourself a Better Environment’ campaign, which is aimed at keeping plastic bags out of the waste stream.
Bayside Mayor, Councillor Terry O’Brien, said the campaign was particularly relevant to Bayside, a coastal Council in Melbourne’s inner south east.
“We are surrounded by beaches where the impact of plastic bags is extremely noticable,” he said.
The campaign asks shoppers and retailers to do the following.
- Say no to plastic bags.
- Use alternatives, such as calico bags, when shopping.
- Recycle plastic supermarket bags at participating supermarkets.
The campaign was developed by Clean Up Australia, Environment Australia, the Australian Retailers Association, Coles, Bi-Lo and Safeway.
