Presented at the IPWEA International Public Works Conference, the National Local Government Engineering Medal for 2003 was awarded to Tony Reed and Ryde City Council for the West Ryde Drainage Tunnel Project.
This prestigious national award recognises excellence in the design and/or construction of a Local Government engineering project.
The project arose out of options developed for the mitigation of flooding in the West Ryde shopping precinct following severe flooding which occurred between 1984 and 1990. The flooding resulted in significant property damage and risk to the public. The preferred option was the construction of a 3.6 metre diameter tunnel conveying stormwater away from the shopping centre directly to Parramatta River – a distance of 1.7 km.
The E J (Ted) Hooper Medal for the Best Paper presented at the 2003 Conference was won by Tom Yelland of the Bankstown Civic Services Group, Bankstown City Council.
The Keith H Wood Medal, awarded once every two years, recognises an outstanding engineer in Local Government, who reflects dedication and contribution to the industry and the Institute that is worthy of commendation. This year the Award was presented to Jack Riddiford of Tasmania. Jack has had a long term involvement with Local Government and the Institute, including terms as President and Treasurer of the National body and also as State President.
