Training packages are

Providing access to training opportunities for staff is vital, as skilled workers are a fundamental component of a successful and productive workforce. Training packages provide a framework for identifying additional skills and training needed for a specific job. They can also offer a great opportunity for people who have been working in an industry, but do not have a formal qualification, to obtain recognition of their skills. Australian Local Government Training (ALGT) is the national Industry Training Advisory Board for both the Local Government and water industry. The two training packages developed for these industry sectors include the Local Government Training Package (LGA00) and the Water Industry Training Package (NWP01). Both of these training packages are currently undergoing a comprehensive review to ensure that the standards within them are both current and reflective of the skill and training needs of these diverse and vibrant industries.

What is in the Local Government Training Package?

The Local Government specific qualifications are divided into four broad and overlapping qualification pathways, each representing a central focus of Local Government activity. They include the following:

  • Governance and Administration
  • Planning and Management of the Physical Environment
  • Environmental Health and Regulation
  • Operational Works.

What is in the Water Industry Training Package?

The qualifications in the Water Industry Training Package have been structured to meet the needs of all water industry employees, including those working in Water Source, Water Distribution, Water Collection and Water Treatment.

Individual workplaces have different training needs and therefore competency based training has a clear workplace focus. In this context, training is not seen as an ‘add on’ but essential to a person’s job description.

With this in mind, Carla Scomazzon, the recently appointed Executive Officer of ALGT, would like to encourage all Human Resource Managers to consider the value of utilising the training packages not only as a training tool but also as a performance management tool.

Why not utilise national competency standards as the benchmark for your organisation? Visit our web site at www.algt.com.au to discover what competency based training and the training packages can do for your organisation and to learn more about ALGT.
