Making informed decisions

Think Global, Act Local is a well worn mantra from the 1980s but the future impact of decisions made by Local Government on our energy use cannot be underestimated. To be staged from 26–29 November at The University of Melbourne, ‘DESTINATION RENEWABLES – from research to market’, promises a wealth of practical information that Local Government can use to make informed decisions for a sustainable energy future.

DESTINATION RENEWABLES is the 41st annual conference of the Australian and New Zealand Solar Energy Society.

Local Government participation at the joint ANZSES/Cities for Climate Protection conference held in Newcastle last year resulted in the theme of this conference. Local Government asked for the more practical application of renewable’s research.

DESTINATION RENEWABLES intends to deliver this and will focus on overcoming technical and non technical barriers, consider fossil fuel bridging technologies, and identify how to encourage wide scale uptake of renewable technologies in the community.

Keynote speakers include David Young (SEAV), Greg Bourne (BP Australasia), Geoff Willis (Hydro Tasmania) and Monica Oliphant (MRET review panel).

Thursday 26 November will be Local Government day, with themes and presentations from the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives. Saturday 28 November is a public day, the latest in renewable power systems and energy efficient technologies showcased to the Melbourne public.

Organised jointly with the Alternative Technology Association, the public day is a great opportunity for Local Government to exhibit its commitment to sustainable energy.

Your attendance at the conference will be rewarded with volumes of technically sound and market based information and excellent networking opportunities. It will be the most significant opportunity this year to meet key industry players and access the latest information on government policy development over the coming years.
