Postgraduate study in law is becoming increasingly popular with professionals whose work requires legal knowledge but who have no formal legal training. Subjects offered through the Melbourne Law School’s Graduate Program provide professionals working in government, industry and community organisations with the opportunity to join with others with comparable interests in gaining specialist knowledge in areas of law relevant to their careers.
Local Government employees have undertaken specialist masters degrees and graduate diplomas at the Melbourne Law School in such areas as construction law, labour relations law and government law. In doing so, they have been able to better understand the legal framework within which they work. This enhances their ability to ensure compliance and assists in the development of appropriate policies and procedures.
Specialist graduate diplomas and masters degrees are open both to law graduates and graduates in other disciplines with relevant professional work experience. Single subject enrolments are also available. This provides a unique opportunity for professionals on either side of the legal divide to share views and to learn from fellow students as well as from the academic and professional experts who teach the subjects.
Courses offered in 2004 are still open for enrolments. Details of courses on offer are available through the faculty web site at www.law.unimelb.edu.au
