Local politics in the pub

Following each Council meeting in Launceston, Tasmania, Councillors head for the pub. Nothing unusual about that except that the aim is to meet people and discuss issues affecting the community.

Mayor Janie Dickenson said the politics in the pub began as a way to engage the local community.

“People can meet us on an informal basis and discuss the issues affecting them,” Janie Dickenson said.

At the last session, tourism operators wanted to discuss the impact of the new airline Jetstar and the reduced number of Qantas flights to Tasmania. There was also an information session for young people interested in a cultural tour with the Launceston – Ikeda Sister City Exchange Program. Ikeda and Launceston have been sister cities for the past 40 years.
