Alexandrina integrating sustainability

Alexandrina Council in rural South Australia has successfully integrated its environmental, economic and social goals into its strategic planning process. Local Agenda 21 Project Officer, Graham Webster, said the project is a solid demonstration that smaller, rural councils are able to engage in and benefit from sustainability planning, such as that provided by applying Local Agenda 21.

Council’s Corporate Plan with its triple bottom line goals and objectives is proof, as are the departmental plans, consultation methods and investment in qualified people that ensures a holistic approach to everything the Council does. Alexandrina’s willingness to open up decision making processes to the community is testimony of an open and inclusive Council.

A review of policies to ensure their relevance to sustainable objectives is ongoing. Engagement of younger people, older people and Indigenous people reflects Council’s desire to communicate effectively and be open to receiving criticism.

Its regional approach to community development issues, such as the community housing project and Goolwa Skill project, is clear evidence of successful and sustainable working partnerships.
