Renmark Paringa Council in South Australia’s Riverland region recently celebrated the milestone of 100 Years of Local Government. Council marked the occasion, 100 years to the day after the first ever Council meeting, by hosting a gala dinner which saw 180 invited guests celebrate in style.
South Australian Governor, Marjorie Jackson-Nelson, was guest of honour. This marked the Governor’s third official visit to the region and she spoke fondly of many happy memories of the area through family holidays over the years.
Senator Ian Campbell, Federal Minister for Local Government, was keynote speaker commending Council on reaching such a significant marker in the community’s history.
Other speakers included Neil Andrew MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives and the region’s Local Member, Rory McEwen MP, SA Minister for State Local Government Relations, Karlene Maywald MP, Leader of the National Party in SA, and Councillor John Legoe, President of the Local Government Association of South Australia.
Earlier that day the Governor officiated at the Council’s time capsule burial ceremony along the banks of the River Murray in Renmark. Seven capsules were buried containing various articles collated by local schools. These capsules will be unearthed on 6 May 2029.
Renmark Paringa’s Mayor, Rod Thomas, said he was pleased with the centenary celebrations and looks forward to continuing celebrations with various other events scheduled for the remainder of 2004.
