Roads technology forum

The 2004 Road System and Engineering Technology Forum will be held at the Bardon Conference Centre in Brisbane on 4–6 August. The technology forum has grown from humble beginnings in 1995 with an attendance of around 80 to in excess of 400 delegates from the Department of Main Roads, Queensland Transport, Local Government and private consultants.

The inaugural forum was held at the Brisbane Greek Club, and was designed to showcase research and development undertaken by the then Qld Transport Transport Technology Division. Topics included urban design, intelligent transport systems, environmental considerations, and bituminous surfacings innovations. Some of these topics are still being followed through and presented today.

The forum has seen the development of the Pacific Motorway, safety issues surrounding crash barriers and environmental concerns.

Keynote addresses from local and international speakers, workshops and case studies have provided a higher level of awareness and understanding about the administration, design, construction and maintenance of roads.

This forum is targeted at professional and technical staff of Main Roads, their managers and directors, consultants and contractors, and professional and technical staff of Local Government. There will be papers and presentations concerning heavy vehicle management, pavements, project management and design and quality topics.

Workshops will focus on the New Queensland Pavement Design Manual, RoadTek Project Management, equitable contracting and site soils.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Gerard Waldron, Managing Director, ARRB, Victoria.
