Alice Springs a regional leader

As a large regional centre, Alice Springs Town Council is a major player in various initiatives both within Central Australia and wider afield. Town Council has a Memorandum of Understanding with Tangetyere Council Incorporated which administers 18 town camps in Alice Springs. This has recently been revised providing opportunities for additional cooperative ventures.

Alice Springs is the first council in Australia to accept a native title claim over lands within a municipality. As such, it now has a Partnership Agreement with the Lhere Artepe traditional owners.

Council is also in the formative stages of a bilateral agreement with the Northern Territory Government. Early in June, Alice Springs hosted a Community Cabinet Meeting, which enabled Council to address Ministers on a number of issues all in the spirit of good working relations with the NT Government.

In hosting the National General Assembly of Local Government in November 2002, Alice Springs was instrumental in the establishing of the Inland Alliance Group. Comprising Broken Hill, Mt Isa and Kalgoorlie, the four Councils now meet regularly to share common issues as inland regional centres. Council is also involved in the Outback Highway Committee.
