The $2.5 million redevelopment of the Quirindi township is seen as one of the finest recent examples of Local Government economic development. For its efforts, Liverpool Plains Shire Council received a commendation in the Economic Development Category of the 2004 National Awards for Local Government.
Mayor Ian Lobsey said he was extremely proud that Council was recognised as being one of Australia’s leading Local Government bodies for its Resurgence of Quirindi Project.
The project involved several diverse but related activities to increase economic development in Quirindi, a township with about 3,000 people. These include a new recreational, social and tourism complex, improved telecommunications throughout the Shire, the sale of Council’s residential and industrial subdivisions. Most importantly, it has attracted new industries to generate more than 300 jobs.
“Wining this award, has demonstrated what local commitment, resourceful thinking, perseverance and community spirit can achieve,” Mayor Lobsey said.
