A meeting of Mayors and Councillors from eight Councils in inner Sydney has called for action on increasing traffic and transport congestion in the region. The meeting unanimously agreed to call on the New South Wales Premier Bob Carr to urgently seek solutions to mass transit problems in their Local Government areas, including Sydney, Marrickville, Canada Bay, Leichhardt, Randwick, Waverley, Botany and Woollahra.
These represent some of the most densely populated districts in Australia and will accommodate a substantial proportion of Sydney’s future growth.
Sydney City Council presented a case for the development of mass transit options, including light rail and guided buses and it was agreed the State Government has a major role in facilitating this process.
“The population continues to grow and the problems of congestion, pollution and inadequate public transport are only going to increase,” said Sydney Lord Mayor, Clover Moore.
The Mayors are seeking an urgent meeting with the Premier to discuss the vital transport infrastructure needs in inner Sydney.
