Keeping the best of the old

Two Local Governments in Melbourne – Moonee Valley and Brimbank – have adopted an innovative approach to swimming pool design. Rather than start from scratch, both have decided to refurbish and revitalise existing buildings Both have commissioned Peddle Thorp Architects to look at tired, old swimming pools.

Peddle Thorp’s work is well regarded and includes Vodafone Arena, the Melbourne Underwater World Aquarium, the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery. Design Director, Peter Brook, said the company’s work often centred on finding good solutions to complex problems.

“These buildings are community hubs as well as swimming pools, and it is sometimes best to keep the old building because they are so loved by the community,” he said. “These buildings may be old and tired and need a full refurbishment.”

Peter Brook said the solution can mean lower costs for the community than simply knocking over a building and starting again.

“Knocking down a building is not often the best approach in the long run,” he said. “Designing buildings must be decided on its own merits and community concerns. In the case of Brimbank, there was extensive public consultation to make sure the design met community needs. Refurbishing is an excellent solution for Local Governments operating on tight budgets.”

A new building may cost in the order of $20 million, while refurbishing can cost about $5 million.

The Brimbank pool now incorporates some interesting features such as a combined leisure and program pool in one area. The multi purpose centre has a community garden and a separate gym on the second floor to improve privacy of people exercising.

Brimbank Councillor, Sam David, said the appointment of Peddle Thorp Architects was good news for the Council and the Sunshine community.

“This is a well known and respected company with a long history of working with Councils and local communities to develop major projects,” he said. “Additional consultation will be a key component of Peddle Thorp’s process as they further refine and develop the concept plan for the centre, which was supported by the State Government with $1.48 million funding under the Better Pools program.”
