The National Heart Foundation and Kellogg are offering $30,000 in awards to assist Local Governments to continue to work towards improving the heart health of their communities. The Heart Foundation Kellogg Local Government Awards recognise excellence in encouraging heart healthy lifestyles and promote the fight against heart, stroke and blood vessel disease, Australia’s number one killer and our biggest health problem.
Awards are given in each of seven categories at national and state/territory levels for policy, nutrition projects, physical activity projects, recreation facilities, projects by community organisations, rural and remote projects and projects with limited resources.
Richmond Shire Council won the $10,000 national best overall and recreation infrastructure award in 2004 for its Lake Fred Tritton recreational lake, located within walking distance from Richmond in north west Queensland.
“The aim of this community project was to improve the quality of life of our residents,” said Richmond Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, John Scarce. “Previously, the area was made up of broken gullies and an eroding landscape, which was rarely visited by people. We set out to create a beautiful parkland with a 1.3 km walking track and now it’s used regularly by the community.”
Richmond Shire Council surpassed six other national winners from Tennant Creek Primary School, Caloundra City Council, City of Mandurah, YP Community Transport and Services Inc, Shire of East Pilbara, the Marthakal Homelands Centre and Mapuru Food Cooperative to clinch the 2004 award.
