Citizen to Councillor seminars assist perspective candidates

People in Victoria’s north east considering running for Council elections later this year, and uncertain about what is required or how to go about it, were invited to an information seminar held on 7 September. With elections scheduled for 26 November 2005, prospective candidates in three neighbouring Councils, Indigo, Alpine and the Rural City of Wangaratta, attended.

“For the last elections, Indigo Shire ran its own candidates briefing,” said CEO, John Costello. “This time we decided to run a combined event.”

During the session, the roles and responsibilities involved in being a Councillor were outlined as well as useful advice on improving candidates’ chances of being elected.

Speakers from the Municipal Association of Victoria and Victorian Electoral Commission provided information about the respective Council areas, advice on who can nominate, how to nominate, and what is required of a Councillor.

Experienced Councillors discussed their experiences to assist prospective candidates understand what the public expects of Councillors, time demands, rewards and election campaign techniques.

“We also invited a CEO and Councillors from outside the three participating Councils to provide an independent perspective for the candidates,” said John Costello.

The session included an opportunity for open discussion and questions. The session was run free of charge and each registered participant received a comprehensive information kit.
