Reinventing water supply

Staff from Logan Water, a division of Logan City Council in QLD, have developed a revolutionary design for providing emergency water supply. The Camel is a portable water tank and pump facility that holds up to 1,600 litres of water. It can also be directly connected to the water supply of affected properties.

The pump delivers water at a rate of 60 to 250 litres per minute, and it runs on both electricity and petrol in case of a power failure.

The portable facility was developed to reduce the impact of water outages on the local community. It also allows Council to conduct planned works during daylight hours by reducing interruptions to water supply. This is expected to lower both the danger and excess cost involved in conducting late night projects.

Another major benefit of the Camel design is that it can be fitted to elevated properties, fire hydrants and homes with no reticulated water supply. It has already been of major assistance to a veterinary surgery that had a vital need for uninterrupted water supply during surgical procedures. The Camel has since been used by schools, childcare facilities, shopping centres, dental clinics and other commercial and residential properties.

Logan City Council’s Camel invention recently received a commendation in the Performance Improvement section of the 2005 National Awards for Local Government.
