Harmony Day film festival focuses on young people

During 2006, Launceston will be host to a range of events and projects that reflect its people and place in Australia and the development of Tasmania. 2006 has been chosen as the year for the people of Launceston to rediscover their past, embrace their differences and shape the future in a celebration of the community called It’s About Us 2006.

It’s About Us 2006 not only marks 200 years since the establishment of Launceston, but 35,000 years of the Tasmanian Aboriginal people whose home is the Tamar area.

As part the celebrations, Launceston City Council will present the Launceston Harmony Film Screening on 19 and 24 March.

“The Film Festival will feature a selection of locally produced and other films,” said It’s About Us Committee Member, Deputy Mayor, Annette Waddle. “As part of preparations for the festival, we have invited young local film makers to enter short films of three to 20 minutes in duration in a competition. The films must be based on the theme of living in harmony.

“A range of topics could be covered by films including how living in harmony is achieved, opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds who are new to a community and racial tolerance. Entry is open to young people between 16 and 25 years of age. All entries will be eligible for prizes and for their work to be screened at the Film Festival.”

The first prize, if the entry is submitted through a school or TAFE, is $500 for that school or TAFE and a $100 voucher for the student. The runner up will receive $50 and a $200 voucher for their educational institution. There will also be an individual prize of $150.
