Riverway a cultural, environmental and recreational river foreshore showpiece

An exciting new development is under way on the banks of North Queensland’s Ross River at Thuringowa. An 11km stretch of the river foreshore is being developed to include a cultural centre, adjoining swimming lagoons, and sport and recreation facilities.

Stage one is due for completion in April 2006. This stage of the development will focus on providing an inner city arts and recreational environment for both residents and visitors to the City of Thuringowa.

The cultural centre will be built at the popular Pioneer Park. Providing a multi functional performance space, it will be used for concerts, workshops, conferences and weddings. The centre will also provide administration and rehearsal spaces for performing arts groups.

One of the design features will be a grassed outdoor amphitheatre built on the sloping roof of the cultural centre. Nearby there will be two recreational swimming lagoons, joined by a water cascade. The upper lagoon will be for lap swimming and lessons, while the lower lagoon will have more of a recreational feel. Plans include a sandy beach and timber boardwalks. The recreational lagoon will also include specific areas for older people and disabled access, with handrails and suitable water levels.

Stage two developments will begin early in 2006 with the construction of a new sports complex. This has been planned with a view to hosting AFL games and international cricket matches. The new development will be vibrant and of a world class standard. It aims to give Thuringowa a unique riverfront identity.

The two stage project will cost a total of $42 million once completed. It is expected to attract national and international visitors and create employment opportunities in the area.
