Victoria Police and Macedon Ranges Shire Council form training partnership

The Victoria Police Airlie Leadership Development Centre (ALDC) and Macedon Ranges Shire Council have formed a partnership to provide a leadership development course for Council staff in supervisory and management positions. The program is based on the leadership program developed by the ALDC, which has been delivered to some 3,500 team leaders in Victoria Police.

Several months have been spent developing the course content to suit the Council environment and its primary focus is on building cooperative and productive relationships in the workplace and community.

The modified program takes into account the organisational values statement, roles and responsibility statements and Code of Professional Conduct. These have been introduced over the last 12 months and set standards for staff conduct and clarify the level of responsibility and expectations for staff at all levels of the organisation.

The program is conducted over a five week period with a total of 45 staff (three groups of 15) participating, including the Chief Executive, Directors, Managers and Team Leaders.

Although the ALDC has considerable experience working with overseas and state police forces, this is the first time it has worked in partnership with a Victorian Council to develop such a dynamic leadership program. Both parties share the view that developing leadership abilities will create a stronger organisational culture, which translates into better outcomes for the community.

“This is an exciting and innovative partnership that will help strengthen leadership capacity throughout the organisation by developing the people and workplace management skills of our key staff, as well as further strengthening the bond between Council and police,” said Ian Morris, Council’s Chief Executive Officer.

Feedback from participants has been extremely positive, especially because of the practical nature of the materials used and the opportunity it gives staff to learn new methods and techniques that are easy to understand and apply.

The first three groups have now finished the program and will have the opportunity to attend follow up sessions early next year. A second program is also planned for mid 2006 for a further 45 staff.
