Providing vibrant artistic and cultural expression is a key ingredient in reaching out to Hume’s diverse community. Each year, Hume City Council hosts the Hume Winter Music Festival. The event is held over four weeks and involves more than 30 concerts, events and workshops at historic venues and cultural centres across the City. Council awards grants totalling $20,000 to community groups enabling them to participate and showcase the myriad of awesome talents and rich cultures in the City.
Hume’s senior citizens are getting a ‘workout’ as part of Council’s Living Longer, Living Stronger program. The program is aimed at over 50’s and increases the range and quality of strength training opportunities for senior citizens. It provides many positive outcomes including physical, social, health and well being. Participants become stronger and healthier, and establish friendships and enhanced confidence in participating in other community activities. More than 200 senior citizens participate in the programs which are run at all three of Council’s leisure centres.
An instant hit with the Hume community has been the re-opening of the redeveloped Broadmeadows Leisure Centre Aquatic Area in February 2005. The $3.35 million redevelopment includes state-of-the-art plant and equipment, a 25 metre pool with increased water depth, a wet deck, a new spa and sauna, a number of new leisure play water features and refurbished changing rooms that offer improved facilities for families, school groups and people with disabilities.
