Sustainable unit complex benefits residents and the community

Located six kilometres from Brisbane CBD, the suburb of Clayfield will soon be home to the city’s first sustainable unit complex, Viret at Clayfield. Currently under construction by QM Properties, the units will house two rainwater tanks, holding 62,000 litres of water.

Brisbane Lord Mayor, Councillor Campbell Newman, said the tanks will enable the unit complex to self supply water for toilets, irrigation, topping up the swimming pool and washing cars.

“I’m pleased to see developers adopting sustainable practices in their new properties,” he said. “In addition to water savings, Viret also has a number of other sustainable features, which means each unit buyer will be eligible for Council’s $500 Sustainable Home Rebate.”

Brisbane Councillor, Tim Nicholls, said to be eligible for the rebate, properties must meet a minimum number of points from the Sustainable Home Rebate checklist.

“Water is a precious resource, and people choosing to live in this complex will be at the forefront of water conservation in the city,” he said. “The current drought presents Brisbane with a significant challenge and encourages us to use even more innovative ways to conserve our valuable water supply. Brisbane City Council is offering double points for water efficiency elements in the Sustainable Home Rebate checklist, including rainwater tanks.”

Apartments in Viret also feature a unique ‘breezeway’ designed to maximise natural light and ventilation. The inclusion of breezeways gives each apartment three active facades, a unique feature in multistorey developments. The benefit is natural climate control all year round and light, airy living spaces.

Other Viret sustainable design features that improve liveability, reduce the burden on the environment and save money include:

  • up to 5 star building energy efficiency
  • solar panels for energy conservation allowing residents to reduce their power bills
  • AAA rated tap ware
  • natural vegetation retention
  • low toxicity and embodied energybuilding materials and finishes
  • recycling stations
  • private bike storage for easy access to designated Council bikeways
  • high ceilings
  • materials selected from sustainable sources.
