Heart Foundation Kellogg Local Government Awards

The Heart Foundation and Kellogg are providing $30,000 and recognition to award initiatives that help create healthy communities. Dr Peter Abernethy, the National Director of Cardiovascular Health Programs for the National Heart Foundation, said that the 2006 Awards have been refocussed on the implementation of programs that build social connections, encourage people to be physically active, smoke free and make healthy food choices.

“This focus will highlight the impact that Local Governments are having on creating healthy communities,” he said.

Entry is now open for 2006. Categories are as follows:

Implementation of Plans and Policies to Support Heart Health

Recognising Local Governments’ development and effective implementation of policies and plans that support people to be heart healthy. It acknowledges that integration of plans and policies into program delivery encourages sustainability and successful outcomes.

Provision and Use of Facilities to Improve Heart Health

Recognising Local Governments that develop and implement programs to use their facilities to improve heart health. It acknowledges that Council facilities can be used to achieve long term health benefits, if the community is suitably engaged.

Programs that Improve Heart Health in Priority Groups

Recognising Local Governments that develop and implement programs in collaboration with the community which improve the health of priority groups. It acknowledges the impact of community based programs to improve, promote and sustain the health and well-being of their own communities.

Programs that Promote Healthy Weight

Recognising programs that address the increasing levels of overweight and obesity in their communities. It highlights Local Governments that are innovative in their approach to effectively implement programs promoting healthy eating and physical activity in their community.
